Syracuse Member Makes the Papers
One NYSSCPA member has made two appearances in local media in the last six months (does this make three?) -- and not just for the expert financial insights for which CPAs are often sought.
Syracuse chapter member Gary A. Grossman, a partner at Green & Seifter CPAs PLLC, was tapped by Syracuse's Post-Standard in January for a feature about local art collectors. In the piece, Gary says he's been collecting art for around 20 years and "looks at art constantly."
He also serves as Vice President of the board for the Everson Museum of Art. Oh, and he knows his way around professional photography equipment, too -- as evidenced by some helpful tips he offered me last fall when I interviewed him for another story, and another publication, the Syracuse newsweekly The Eagle. I had heard that Gary used a standing desk, and he welcomed me into his office to see the set-up for myself. The standing desk is, indeed, exactly what it sounds like: a workspace at which one stands, instead of sits. Seeing how much Gary enjoyed working while standing was intriguing, but not quite convincing enough for me to take the plunge (although it did inspire a fellow editor to devise his own standing workspace for a few days).
When I happened to see Gary's photo on the Post-Standard's home page last month, I was thrilled that a Society member was being recognized for a hobby outside of the profession (although our members offer valuable insight for financially-focused stories, too). The Trusted Professional is always looking for members to feature in our CPA profiles section, like Buffalo chapter member and photographer Joseph R. Wild, or Southern Tier Chapter President Lori Jansen, aka the Parlor City Tricks roller derby team's Silver A. Sassinator. If you know of an NYSSCPA member who has interests and hobbies that break the CPA stereotype, let us know! Email your profile suggestions and tips to me directly at aolson@nysspca.org.
