The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is now tweeting regularly, with reminders of rules, such as e-filing regulations; lists of resources, such as local sales tax rates; and advice for tax professionals, such as how to conduct online tax transactions on behalf of clients.
Twitter members can
sign up to receive the tweets on their computers or smartphones. The state is averaging about two tweets a day. The twitter feed has not been widely publicized, and so far has fewer than 100 followers, but it will no doubt get more as taxpayers and tax preparers discover the useful information in the tweets.
By comparison, the
NYSSCPA twitter feed has more than 2,000 followers, and pop star Lady Gaga has just over 19 million.
"Twitterati" is defined by the
Urban Dictionary as the "Tweet elite, whose feeds attract thousands of followers and whose 140-character spews capture the attention of the rapt who doggedly monitor them."
