An audit performed by Big Four firm Ernst and Young has confirmed that the majority of the alleged women on infidelity website Ashley Madison are, in actuality, chat bots designed to get money out of gullible men, according to
Fortune. In fact, according to Fortune, men talking to these chat bots made up 80 percent of initial purchases on the site. The bots were there to give the impression of a far more active female membership. In truth, admitted the CEO after the audit, the male-to-female ratio on the site was about 5-1.
This revelation comes amid an FTC investigation into the site in the aftermath of the devastating data leak last year that exposed the information of 32 million users, as well as gave strong evidence of unethical business practices. While the FTC investigation is centered around the site's data security, Fortune said it could expand into its use of bots, as well as billing practices (such as threatening to expose members who complained about the site).
