January 1999 Issue Career Advice and Candidates Information on New Website By Wayne Whalen
The New York State Association of CPA Candidates' new website, www.cpacandidates.com, is a resource for Association members as well as any individual interested in becoming a CPA.
"The purpose of the website is that it offers a practical benefit that showcases what the Association is all about," said Ron Friedman, CPA Candidates Association President. The Candidates' site offers information about the benefits of membership, upcoming events, and links to related sites. Some of these links include New York colleges and universities offering accounting programs, a directory of CPA firms offering employment to professionals, and access to CPA review course resources. The website is the latest benefit of the CPA Candidates Association, a division of the NYSSCPA that helps professionals and students prepare for the CPA exam and receive certification. The association is an independent, nonprofit organization run by and for its members. "By promoting events online we hope to encourage involvement and increase membership," Friedman said. "This major push addresses an immediate and practical need in today's world. This sort of presence allows young professionals and students to exchange ideas in a way that helps one another." Any individual interested in becoming a certified public accountant is eligible for membership. Full-time students carrying 12 or more credit hours per semester can apply for associate membership. Dues are $30 per year for associate membership and $40 per year for full membership. Visit www.cpacandidates.com for a downloadable membership application form. Candidates members belong to one of the three chapters that provide opportunities to network with peers and other professionals on a local level by participating in career planning workshops and social events. Members also can request a copy of The Career Opportunities Handbook, an NYSSCPA publication that profiles employment opportunities and personnel contacts at small and medium-sized firms throughout New York state. The handbook also will be available online. The Association offers a variety of professional seminars led by distinguished CPAs to help candidates prepare and learn more about the practicing world of accounting. Past presentations have included such topics as helpful hints for the CPA exam, recruiting at small and medium-sized firms, setting your audit issues, time management, and surviving in today's job market. To find out more about upcoming events, visit the calendar section at www.cpacandidates.com. Individuals also can access the Candidates' site through the link on the CPA 2000 section of the NYSSCPA's site, www.nysscpa.org. * |
