April 1999 Issue Coalition Lobbies for Tort Reform Albany Event to Take Place on May 11 New Yorkers for Civil Justice Reform, a coalition of more than 130 trade associations, chambers of commerce, and professional societies statewide, will sponsor "Civil Justice Reform," a day of lobbying, on Tuesday, May 11, in Albany. According to NYCJR Chair Mark Alesse, the goal of the coalition, of which the NYSSCPA is a member, is to bring balance, fairness, and common sense to the state's tort law. Alesse urges all coalition members to come to Albany and demonstrate support for the Civil Justice Reform Act sponsored by Sen. Dale Volker (Erie) and Assemblyman Joseph Morelle (Rochester). The legislation (S.2277/A.4509) proposes reforms for joint and several liability, product liability, volunteer liability, attorneys' fees, and a $250,000 limit on noneconomic damages, among other provisions. To participate in the lobby day, or for additional information on the proposed act, contact NYSSCPA Director of Governmental Affairs Fong Chan at (212) 719-8418, (800) 633-6320, or fchan@nysscpa.org. Members can call the NYCJR directly at (518) 436-1072. * |
