Community Affairs Committee Open House Attracts 40 Organizations

By Paul Sinegal

The annual open house of the NYSSCPA Community Affairs Committee drew more than 40 nonprofit and charitable organizations from the New York and New Jersey areas this year, and most were first time participants. The event, designed to introduce accounting professionals to nonprofit organizations in need of volunteers, took place on May 17 at the Society offices in Manhattan.

Several organizations sought assistance with bookkeeping, budgeting, and tax compliance issues. "We’re specifically looking for CPAs to help us keep our books in order," said Jonathan Fluck, executive director for the Interboro Repertory Theatre of Manhattan.

Sister Ann Woodford of Amethyst House, a halfway house for women, echoed the need for assistance with financial matters but added that one doesn't have to be a CPA to volunteer at Amethyst House.

"There are many other volunteer opportunities," Woodford said.

Lil Vassall of Imani House, an organization that develops educational programs to help low-income families, women, youth, and immigrants, also expressed a need for nonaccounting assistance.

"We especially need someone who can help us design our new website," Vassall said.

Approximately 20 potential volunteers attended this year's event.

"I work at a large Wall Street firm, so I'm interested in volunteering for smaller, less corporate organizations," said Greg Markaizan, one of the CPA attendees.

Fewer CPAs and agencies than were expected attended the open house, yet several organizations were pleased with the turnout.

"Four people expressed interest in our organization and were very nice," said Pamela LaBonne of the Interboro Repertory Theatre. "It was also nice to meet people from other agencies."
