Hoops Solicits Names for the AICPA Council

Editor’s Note: The following is a transcript of an e-mail sent on behalf of NYSSCPA President Jeff Hoops to the Society membership:

Subject: Soliciting Interest in Serving on American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Council

In January 2004, the New York State Society of CPAs will propose four people to the AICPA Nominating Committee to serve three-year terms on the Institute’s 265-person Governing Council. In addition, one person will be designated by the Society to serve a one-year term as its representative to Council. In the recent past, NYSSCPA candidates for Council have been chosen by the Society’s president. Last year, President Jo Ann Golden expanded the process by consulting with me, as president-elect, in arriving at her list of individuals and ultimately obtaining the approval of the Society’s Executive Committee.

I intend to greatly broaden the process in my year as president. With this e-mail I am soliciting the entire membership to learn the names of any members interested in serving on Council. These individuals will be vetted by a selections subcommittee of the board of directors; and the full board will ultimately act to designate the names of individuals for service on AICPA Council. The selections subcommittee is chaired by President-Elect John Kearney and also includes board members Spencer Barback, Katie Doran, Richard Piluso, and Philip Wolitzer.

Service on Council is very important to the CPA profession. While day-to-day governance of the AICPA is handled by the AICPA’s Board of Directors, which has about 25 members, the Council makes the final decision on the most important AICPA initiatives. Council meets twice a year in various locations around the country. Each Council meeting lasts for 2 1/2 days. In addition it holds one-day regional meetings once a year, ours typically being held in New York.

If you, or a colleague you know, is interested in serving on AICPA Council, please contact the Society’s in-house legal counsel, Jim Woehlke, at jwoehlke@nysscpa.org or 212-719-8347. You need to be an AICPA member to serve on Council.
