KPMG has said that it is accelerating its initiatives to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into KPMG Clara, which is the firm's global smart audit platform.

KPMG said that the deployment of AI agents into Clara aims to empower over 95,000 auditors worldwide to continue boosting audit quality and deliver deeper insights to member firm clients while facilitating a rise in productivity, the firm noted.

AI agents are basically software programs that utilize AI to interact with their environment, collect  data while making  decisions to attain specific goals that are set by humans.  They are different from traditional AI chatbots that follow pre-defined scripts. Instead, AI agents can reason, plan, learn and act independently often without needing human intervention.

"We’re continuing to build out our AI capabilities with increasingly sophisticated agents in KPMG Clara to enable KPMG firms’ auditors to more effectively respond to risks and deliver deeper audit insights" Scott Flynn, global head of audit, KPMG International and KPMG in the US vice chair in audit. "As KPMG firms accelerate the adoption of this innovative technology and deploy new capabilities, we are maintaining a high level of professional skepticism and upskilling KPMG professionals to drive trust in the capital markets."

These efforts by KMPG to integrate AI into its operations is part of bigger trend with the Big 4 accounting firms. In March, The Trusted Professional reported that together, the Big 4 have "allotted billions to integrate AI into core platforms and guide their blue-chip clients to making the most of AI."

According to KPMG, the AI agents that were just deployed are designed to support standardizing and automating different aspects of the audit process while including important procedures such as expense vouching and the search for unrecorded liabilities and accrued expenses.

The accounting giant said that the AI agents deployed in this release are developed to:

• Automate routine tasks. AI agents are able to deal with rudimentary and tedious work including data analysis and document review.

• Support decision-making. AI agents offer auditors insights and suggestions that are based on data analysis. They also assist audit professionals in making informed decisions and improving the quality of audits.

• Help auditors in focusing on high-risk areas. With AI handling routine tasks, auditors can allot more time to high-risk areas and sector-specific problems. This ensures that audits are more comprehensive and targeted.
