As the demand for remote jobs in the United States outpaces
supply, those Americans who still want to work from home might consider looking abroad for jobs, CNBC
Make It reported.
The number of American workers hired by international companies grew by 62
percent last year, according to the State of
Global Hiring Report by Deel, a human resources platform that specializes in global
hiring. The report is based on 300,000 contracts between Deel customers and
workers for both contractors and full-time employees. Roughly 85 percent of
those contracts are for remote positions.
“Despite growing return-to-office measures, distributed hiring continues to
climb, expanding beyond technical roles to those like sales and content,” the
report states.
American workers are most likely to be hired by companies in the United Kingdom,
Canada, France, Singapore and Australia, the report found. The top five cities
for global hiring in 2023 were London, Toronto, San Francisco, Buenos Aires and
Madrid. The most popular global roles in 2023 were software engineers and developers,
sales, content, product, and design.
The increase in U.S. workers applying for remote jobs headquartered overseas
“feels correlated with the elimination of remote roles” stateside, Deel CEO
Alex Bouaziz told CNBC Make It.
But working for foreign companies can present difficulties, such as taxes
and other human resources compliance issues, as well as differences in time
zones. There all also cultural differences, which “can be quite intense,”
Bouaziz said.
But there are also advantages, such as a different style of communication or
perspective on work-life balance. Or one might thrive integrating into an
organization with more diversity, Bouaziz said, especially if one gets to work
with colleagues across multiple countries. Those benefits can extend beyond the
workplace. “Different perspectives help you have a different lens on the world,”
he said.
Being able to bring a company to a new U.S. market can be an interesting
challenge, Bouaziz added, as the worker may get to be among the first to bring
U.S. culture to an international organization.
CNBC suggested that Americans who are interested in getting remote jobs abroad start by using job boards such as LinkedIn and filtering for remote jobs based “worldwide.”
“Don’t overthink it too much,” Bouaziz said. “You’ll find that people,
wherever you go, tend to be nice.”
