Trump Replaces Acting IRS Commissioner

President Donald Trump has replaced the acting IRS commissioner amid increasing turmoil within the tax agency. 

According to USA Today, Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender is taking over as acting commissioner, the Treasury spokesperson said. Faulkender replaces Gary Shapley, who only recently got the job.

“Trust must be brought back to the IRS, and I am fully confident that Deputy Secretary Michael Faulkender is the right man for the moment,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted. The tax agency is under the Treasury Department.

The IRS overhaul at the IRS from a clash between Bessent and Elon Musk, says news reports. Musk, who is in charge of  the Department of Government Efficiency, reportedly pushed to have Shapley as acting commissioner. This caused Bessent to complain about interference at the IRS, which is under the Treasury Department oversees,  The New York Times reports. 

Despite his departure, Bessent praised Shapley in his statement and said he “remains among my most important senior advisors.”

Faulkender is going to be the fifth leader of the IRS in 2025. Shapley succeeded Melanie Krause, who departed from the the position following the IRS' agreement to share tax information with federal immigration agents to assist them in their search for illegal immigrants in the U.S. Acting Commissioner Doug O'Donnell departed in March.

The agreement between the IRS and Homeland Security is among a number of current IRS initiatives. The agency has started laying off thousands of of its workers as DOGE pushes mass terminations throughout the federal government
