Joanne S. Barry, CAE, Selected Outstanding Association Executive

NEW YORK, NY, April 3, 2012 – Joanne S. Barry, CAE, Executive Director of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) has been named this year’s Outstanding Association Executive by the New York Society of Association Executives. Barry will receive her award at the association’s Annual Synergy Awards Luncheon and Celebration of Community Service on April 18th in New York City.
 
Winners for the Outstanding Association Executive Award, one of the Association’s Synergy Awards, are based on several factors, including contributions to the management function of the nominee’s organization; contributions to community professional, civic, charitable and service organizations; and significant contributions to the association/not-for-profit management profession. Winners must also be current, regular members of the NYSAE and show that they actively support NYSAE’s mission.
 
After a 25-year communications career at the NYSSCPA, Barry became the organization’s Executive Director in 2010. She previously served as Acting Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director and several communications management positions. Barry serves on the Board of Directors of the CPA Society Executives Association (CPA/SEA) and its Emerging Issues and Mission Task Forces. She is also a trustee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Foundation, established to benefit the public by supporting financial education, ethical business behavior and promoting a culturally diverse profession.
 
She also serves on the Board of Trustees and on the Executive Committee of Family and Children’s Services, a not-for-profit organization based in Elizabeth, NJ whose mission is to strengthen families and to build futures for disadvantaged community members. She chairs its Communications and Advocacy Committee and heads a task force on Governance Issues.
 
Barry is a member of the Public Relations Society of America and the International Association of Business Communicators, having served on the Executive Board of the New York Chapter. She also is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and its New York Chapter.  During her career she has won more than 20 awards for communications programs.
 
Barry received a bachelor’s degree in English Literature with a journalism concentration from Montclair State University and a master’s degree in Management and Urban Policy with a concentration in non-profit management at The New School for Social Research in New York. She earned the certified association executive (CAE) credential from the American Society of Association Executives, the highest professional credential in the association industry.
 
Barry and her husband, Edward, reside in Union, NJ and have three sons – Christopher, Justin and Joshua.
