According to a report by Harvard Business Review, feedback is not just a tool for correcting mistakes or tracking progress—it can be a powerful way to help employees find deeper meaning in their work. Research consistently shows that employees who experience greater fulfillment and purpose are more productive, satisfied and likely to stay with their organization.

One way feedback fosters meaning is by promoting mastery. Constructive feedback helps employees identify areas for improvement and develop new skills. By assigning challenging tasks and offering support along the way, managers can empower employees to grow and experience the joy of overcoming obstacles. Encouraging mastery Transforms even routine tasks into opportunities for personal and professional development.

Feedback also highlights and employee’s impact. When managers clearly explain how an individual work contributes to the team or organization, employees gain a sense of purpose. For example, rather than simply saying “good job,” a manager might share how a financial model helped secure a major investment. This connection between effort and results reinforces the value of an employee’s contributions, enhancing job satisfaction and motivation.

Finally, feedback helps employees feel seen and understood. Taking the time to notice and comment on an employee’s behavior—even when it involves constructive criticism—demonstrates care and attentiveness.

By approaching feedback as a conversation, asking questions and providing actionable suggestions for improvement, managers can build stronger connections with their team. This sense of connection fosters trust and reinforces the idea that employees matter as individuals.
